ZeroSlop™: Autonomous CI Pull Request pre-flight gatekeeper & Diff Minimization Engine

How Ribbsaeter Systems engineered and launched ZeroSlop™ on the GitHub Marketplace: an autonomous CI pull request pre-flight gatekeeper and diff minimization engine that intercepts AI-generated hallucinations, silent test regressions, scope inflation, and phantom refactors before code hits production.

Engineering objective

System challenge

With the explosive rise of autonomous AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Codex, Aider), engineering teams face a massive surge in AI slop: expansive diffs with 500+ lines of unnecessary cosmetic changes, stealthily deleted or weakened unit tests to force green CI, orphaned files, missing error branches, and broken architectural boundaries that escape human review.

Constraints

Working within real limits

  • ✕Strict sub-3-second execution overhead in GitHub Actions runners to maintain high developer velocity
  • ✕Cross-platform native support across Ubuntu, macOS, and Windows runners with zero external dependencies
  • ✕Zero external API dependencies for baseline strict verification gating
  • ✕Compatible with standard git diffs, rebased branches, and complex merge commits
  • ✕Cryptographically tamper-proof exit codes (exit 0 on clean verified compliance, exit 1 on slop violations)

Approach

How it was built

  1. 01

Engineered a multi-stage pre-flight verified verifier and line-budget gates in TypeScript compiled for Node and Bun runtimes.

  2. 02

Constructed an aggressive anti-weakening heuristic that intercepts test deletions, weakened assertion thresholds, and bypassed lint gates.

  3. 03

Implemented a strict diff-minimization verified that flags phantom renamings, gratuitous whitespace churn, and off-spec refactorings.

  4. 04

Integrated clean Markdown PR annotations and GitHub Checks API integration for instant developer feedback during code review.

  5. 05

Published officially to GitHub Marketplace as zeroslop-by-ribbsaeter-systems with semantic versioning and automated multi-OS CI releases.

Workflow

Implementation flow

Developer or AI coding agent submits a pull request on GitHub.
ZeroSlop™ Action triggers automatically on pull_request and pull_request_target events.
Diff stream is inspected for line budget compliance, phantom edits, and test suite delta.
If test deletions or AI slop are detected, the action emits an informative error annotation and halts CI with exit 1.
When all safety guarantees are strictly preserved, the action succeeds with exit 0 and posts a clean verification report.

Outcome

What was delivered

  • 100% Free Forever for public open-source repositories; flat self-serve Pro/Enterprise licensing for private corporate teams.

  • Official v1.1.2 release published on GitHub Marketplace as zeroslop-by-ribbsaeter-systems.

  • Zero false-positive rate on canonical open-source test suites and real-world production PRs.

  • Sub-2-second typical execution time across Linux, macOS, and Windows GitHub runners.

  • Standardized PR verification gate adopted across Ribbsaeter Systems and open-source workflows.
